My Daughter-in-Law Canceled My 65th Birthday — So I Quietly Took Back My Home

Twenty-four hours before my sixty-fifth birthday, my daughter-in-law Brooke canceled the dinner I had spent a week preparing. She stood in my kitchen and said her mother felt “uncomfortable” with my presence and wanted the house to herself. The lemon cake was ordered, the silver polished, and two bottles of Julian’s favorite wine waited on the counter.
