“The chairman is here,” the woman said into the receiver, and I did not yet understand that she was talking about me. Within minutes, two men in dark suits came down from an upper floor, and the way they looked at me was nothing like the way my son had looked at me the day before. They led me into a private room with leather chairs and a long glass table, and they set a thick folder in front of me stamped with my husband’s full name and the words “Estate and Holdings” printed beneath it.

The estate attorney arrived twenty minutes later, breathless, apologizing that he’d tried to reach me for a week. He explained that my husband had spent the final two years of his life quietly restructuring everything. The Birchwood Avenue house had only ever been bait, a small property he’d left dangling to see who would reach for it. The real estate, the investment accounts, the Chicago penthouse, and thirty-four million dollars in holdings had been placed into a trust the moment the doctors gave him his diagnosis. And the brass key in my hand opened the one box that held the signed, notarized document naming the single person he had chosen to control all of it.
