Nathan pulled out a phone, held it up, and the giant projector screen behind him flickered to life. He had connected it before the ceremony began, and now the entire auditorium was staring at grainy black-and-white security footage from the auditorium’s own front entrance. The timestamp read 9:12 that morning. On the screen, in perfect silence, Vanessa walked to Row B, picked up the two reserved cards, read the name on them, and tore one cleanly in half before dropping it on the floor. She glanced around to make sure no one was watching, smoothed her cobalt-blue dress, and sat down in my seat.
Six hundred people watched it happen. The gasp that swept the room was so loud it drowned out the hum of the projector. Vanessa shot to her feet, her face the color of ash, insisting it was fake, that it was edited, that this was harassment. But Nathan wasn’t finished. He tapped the screen again, and the footage was replaced by a wall of text messages, blown up large enough for the back row to read. They were Vanessa’s own words, sent to Brandon three days earlier, and the first line alone made the whole auditorium turn toward my ex-husband.
