Three Days After Leaving the Hospital With My Newborn Twins

Three days after coming home from Fort Belvoir Community Hospital with my newborn twin boys Ethan and Noah, my husband Brad served me divorce papers on the kitchen table. He stood there smiling like he had just closed a smart business deal, with his boss Vanessa Holt beside him, her hand resting possessively on his shoulder. My mother-in-law watched from the breakfast bar as Brad pushed the envelope forward and told me to sign. I packed the babies into their carriers with shaking hands and walked out into a heavy December snowstorm in Northern Virginia. One call to my commanding officer got us to the Fisher House near Walter Reed, where volunteer Martha welcomed us with warm blankets, chicken soup, and kindness I desperately needed. From that safe place, I started digging. The discoveries were painful: forged signatures on a large home equity loan, secret transfers to Vanessa’s consulting company, and efforts to block my civilian job opportunities before I even knew the fight existed.
