I never expected a routine drive home to change my life. It started on a rainy Tuesday evening outside Columbus, Ohio. Traffic crawled along the highway while dark clouds hung low over the road. I had just finished a long shift at the warehouse where I worked as a supervisor and was eager to get home. My radio played quietly in the background as windshield wipers pushed away sheets of rain. Everything felt ordinary until I noticed a vehicle several cars behind me flashing green lights. At first, I assumed it was some kind of utility truck or service vehicle, but something about it seemed unusual. The lights blinked steadily, not urgently like police lights, yet they were impossible to ignore. As traffic thinned, I realized the vehicle remained behind me no matter which lane I used. Curious and slightly uncomfortable, I kept glancing into my mirror, wondering who they were and why they seemed to be following the same route.
Over the next several miles, the green-lighted vehicle drew closer. I noticed it was a white van with no visible company logo. The driver never honked or acted aggressively, but the van’s presence became impossible to ignore. Several other motorists appeared confused as well. Some slowed down, while others moved aside cautiously. When I stopped at a red light, the van stopped behind me. When traffic resumed, it followed. My imagination began inventing explanations. Maybe it belonged to a private security company. Maybe it was transporting someone important. Or perhaps it was simply headed in the same direction. Still, the timing felt strange. Eventually, I exited the highway toward a quieter county road. To my surprise, the van exited too. My pulse quickened. I told myself I was being paranoid, but years of watching crime documentaries made me suspicious. I decided that if the van continued following me, I would pull into a public place and find out what was happening.
About fifteen minutes later, I turned into a gas station near the edge of town. The white van followed and parked several spaces away. My stomach tightened. The driver remained inside for a moment before stepping out. He was an older man, probably in his sixties, wearing a reflective jacket with a small green emblem stitched on the chest. Before I could approach him, a young woman emerged from the passenger side carrying a clipboard. She smiled politely and asked if I was Daniel Harper. Hearing my name instantly made me uneasy. I had never seen either of them before. “How do you know who I am?” I asked. The older man exchanged a glance with the woman before reaching into the van and retrieving a weathered folder. “Because,” he said carefully, “we’ve been looking for you for a very long time.” Every instinct told me to leave, but curiosity rooted me in place. Then the woman opened the folder and showed me a photograph.
The picture stole my breath. It showed my mother standing beside a green-lighted van nearly twenty years earlier. She was smiling, her arm wrapped around the shoulders of the same older man standing in front of me. My mother had died when I was twelve. I had never seen that photograph before. “Where did you get this?” I asked. The man looked suddenly emotional. Rain drummed softly against the station canopy as he struggled to find the right words. Finally, he took a deep breath and pointed toward the van. “There’s something your mother wanted you to know,” he said. “Something she asked us to keep secret until the right time.” Then he opened the van’s side door, revealing several old boxes, stacks of files, and one sealed envelope with my name written across the front.
