The Mother They Uninvited And Used For Years Finally Cut Every String At Once

I opened the front door before they could knock. Marissa’s controlled panic cracked the moment she saw my face, and she rushed into that soft, sweet voice she used like a weapon. “Frances, there’s been some kind of mistake with the accounts, all of Desmond’s cards are declining, it’s terribly embarrassing.” I looked at her, then at my son, pale and clutching his phone, and then at Priscilla, who had followed them up the walk carrying the folder from the bank. “There’s no mistake,” I said calmly. “I canceled every authorization connected to Desmond. Last night. All one hundred ninety-six of them.”

Desmond’s mouth opened and closed. “Mom, you can’t just, that’s, we depend on those.” “I know,” I said. “That is exactly the problem.” Marissa’s sweet mask slipped, and for the first time in seventeen years I saw the real face underneath, cold and calculating and furious. “You’re being dramatic,” she hissed. “After everything this family has done for you.” Priscilla, standing quietly on my porch, opened the folder then, not because I needed her to, but because she had insisted on coming when I told her what I planned to do. “Actually,” Priscilla said, in the mild tone of a woman who has seen this many times, “I brought the complete record. I think everyone should see exactly what this family has done.”
