I turned the first page toward Vanessa so the whole table could see it. It was a mortgage statement. Not for my basement apartment. For the entire house. The perfect house, with the perfect chandelier and the perfect mahogany table. “Two years ago,” I said calmly, “when you and Preston ‘generously’ let me move into the basement, you were about to lose this place. Do you remember that? Preston’s business had collapsed. You were four months behind on the mortgage. The bank had already started the paperwork.” Vanessa’s face went very still. Preston set down his wine.

“So I made you an offer,” I continued, sliding the next page across the linen. “I paid off the arrears. I refinanced the loan in my name because your credit was destroyed. You both signed the papers so fast you barely read them. You were so relieved not to lose your magazine house that you never stopped to think about what it meant.” I looked around the table, at my mother’s widening eyes, at my father’s frozen knife, at Grant finally, fully paying attention. “It meant that for two years, while you called me a charity case you were ‘carrying,’ I have legally owned this house. The one you’re sitting in. The rent I paid you every month was me paying you, out of kindness, to live in a basement I already owned.”
