The Stepmother Who Changed Every Lock Never Knew The House Had Belonged To Someone Else All Along

The unknown number sent a single line: “This is Grayson, your father’s attorney. We need to talk about the beach house before Vivienne does something illegal.” My stomach dropped. I called him immediately. Grayson explained, carefully, that my father had indeed signed papers last month transferring the beach house to Vivienne, believing he had the right to. He did not. The house had never belonged to my father to give. It had passed into my mother’s private trust years earlier, with me as sole beneficiary, and my father had only ever been permitted to live in it. Vivienne’s transfer was built on a deed my father never legally held.

“She’s about to spend a great deal of money renovating a house she doesn’t own,” Grayson said. “And she’s filed a false report telling police you’re trespassing on property that is legally yours. That’s not just embarrassing for her. It’s actionable.” I sat down at my little desk, the trust paperwork spread in front of me, my mother’s underlined IMPORTANT staring up. For years Vivienne had rewritten every part of our family, and she had done it because no one ever stopped her. But my mother had stopped her, quietly, from a hospital bed, months before she died. Vivienne just didn’t know it yet. “Send me everything,” I told Grayson. “It’s time she found out.”
