The Husband Who Came Home With A Mistress Forgot Whose Name Was Really On Everything2

The cruise, it turned out, had never been a prize at all. Marcus had lied to me from the very first day. There was no company sweepstakes, no once-in-a-lifetime award. He had taken an unpaid five-month leave, emptied a shared savings account I did not closely monitor, and funded the entire trip himself, for himself and the woman now clinging to his arm. His company had been calling because he had abandoned his position without notice, and they were formally terminating him. The man who stood in that airport announcing his glamorous new life was, as of that week, unemployed, and he did not even know it yet.

I told him all of this quietly, still smiling, while his daughters slept in their stroller. I watched the tan drain from his face. He had come home expecting to hand me a divorce, take my house, and sail off into his “real love.” Instead he learned, in the span of two minutes, that the house was never his to take, that the savings he had spent was traceable and documented, and that the job he assumed he would return to no longer existed. His mistress, whose interest in him had clearly involved certain assumptions about his wealth and stability, turned to look at him with an expression I will treasure for the rest of my life.

“So,” I said gently, “you want a divorce. Wonderful. My attorney will be thrilled, because you spent marital savings on your mistress, and that will be very relevant to child support for three infants. You want the house? It’s mine, Marcus. It always was. Read your own wedding paperwork sometime.” The woman in the white silk blouse let go of his arm entirely then and took a step back, muttering something about needing to call a car. She did not offer him a ride. She simply walked away, wheeling her own suitcase, out of the terminal and out of his suddenly very small new life.

Marcus stood alone in the middle of the airport, no job, no mistress, no house, and three daughters he had never held looking up at nothing from their stroller. I did not gloat, though I had earned the right. I turned the stroller around, adjusted the little pink blankets, and walked toward the exit with my head high. He called after me, his voice cracking, asking if we could talk, if I would wait. I did not stop. The divorce went through cleanly, the court did not look kindly on a man who abandoned a woman on bed rest with triplets to fund an affair, and I kept my grandmother’s house. My daughters will grow up in it, safe and loved, and someday when they are old enough to ask about their father, I will tell them the truth. He had everything that mattered waiting for him at home, and he threw it away for a suntan. His smile disappeared in seconds. Mine never has.
