Judge Herrera turned the first page slowly, and I watched her expression shift from polite skepticism to sharp attention. The binder was not a diary. It was seven years of my life, reconstructed and documented. Bank statements showing accounts opened in my name that I had never authorized. Credit lines totaling over four hundred thousand dollars, taken out using my Social Security number when I was barely out of college. Loan applications carrying my forged signature, all routed to a shell company registered to my father. And receipts, dozens of them, proving where the money had actually gone.

My father stopped laughing. “Your Honor,” Fairbanks began, rising, “this is clearly fabricated, my client has no knowledge of—” The judge raised one hand without looking up. “Counsel, sit down.” She kept turning pages. I found my voice then, steadier than I had ever heard it. “Your Honor, page forty-one is a notarized statement from the bank officer who processed three of these loans. He remembers my father bringing in documents and claiming to hold power of attorney over my finances. He never did. I have his sworn affidavit.” Across the aisle, my father’s face had gone the color of the plaster wall I’d been leaning on an hour earlier.
