Under the table, out of sight, I opened the banking app on my phone and did something I should have done months ago. I didn’t cancel anything dramatic. I simply moved every dollar out of the joint account Ethan and I shared for “family expenses,” the same account his relatives had learned to treat like an open faucet. Then I texted the restaurant manager, whose number I already had from booking the reservation, and asked to speak with him privately near the bar in ten minutes.
When the plates were cleared and the laughter was loudest, my sister-in-law raised her glass and made her usual joke about the walking credit card being ready. Everyone chuckled and turned toward me, waiting for the familiar sight of me reaching for my purse. Instead I stood, smoothed my dress, and said I needed to step away for a moment. I walked to the bar where the manager was already waiting, and I handed him a folded slip of paper with very specific instructions. He read it, glanced at our table, and slowly began to smile. When I returned to my seat, I was calm in a way that made Ethan lean toward me and whisper, “What did you just do?”
