The Widow Left With The Dinner Bill Who Learned Her Name Was Forged On A Half-Million-Dollar Loan

I paid the $1,180, but not because I owed it. I paid it because I did not want Elias, who had been kinder to me in ten minutes than my son had been in ten years, to answer for an unpaid table. Then I stepped outside into the Portland evening, took the folded photocopy from my handbag, and called the after-hours number for Bennett’s bank. A representative came on, verified my identity, and asked the question that turned my blood to ice. “Mrs. Ashford, did you authorize the increase to a five hundred twenty thousand dollar credit line last spring?”

Five hundred twenty thousand. Sheldon’s photocopy had shown four hundred twenty. Between the paper in my hand that morning and the phone call that night, the line had climbed another hundred thousand dollars, all of it in my name, all of it drawn against a home I did not own, secured by a signature that only almost looked like mine. I sat down on a cold bench outside the steakhouse where my son had just walked out on a nine-hundred-dollar wine, and I understood at last that the dinner bill was the smallest theft of the evening. It had merely been the one I was meant to notice, so I would keep smiling and never look at the rest.
