The Tiara And The Deed That Turned One Stolen Birthday Party Completely Upside Down

I reached into the inside pocket of my jacket and pulled out a folded envelope I had grabbed from the truck’s glove box before walking over. Inside was the original deed to the ranch, the one with my name printed across the top in bold county lettering, the seal still crisp after twenty years of ownership. I held it up so the guests closest to the cake could see it clearly. “This,” I said calmly, loud enough to carry across the sudden quiet, “is my birthday present to you. Proof of exactly whose land you’ve been standing on all afternoon.”

The woman’s face flickered between disbelief and rage. She snatched the paper from my hand, scanning it fast, and I watched the color drain from her cheeks as her own eyes landed on the name that was not hers. She opened her mouth to accuse me of forging it, but that was the exact moment two things happened at once. Gravel crunched at the top of the driveway as a county sheriff’s cruiser rolled slowly toward the field, and behind it came a battered pickup I recognized instantly. My caretaker had finally arrived, and he was already shaking his head at the crowd like a man who had just discovered the mess he’d been paid to prevent.
