For the next month, I held him to every word. He took half the school runs, half the bedtime routines, half the laundry, half the grocery planning, and the endless invisible list of things that had quietly been mine alone for twelve years. He discovered what it felt like to answer emails after a full day of chores, to be woken at two in the morning, to plan a birthday party while exhausted. Within two weeks, he had not gone out with anyone. He was too busy learning what my ordinary life had always required.

Then came the part he truly had not prepared for. I actually used my half of the arrangement. I started going out again, seeing friends, taking an evening class I had abandoned years ago, coming home late and happy while he handled the house. I did not date anyone, but he did not know that, and watching me reclaim my own time undid him completely. The open marriage he had pictured as his reward had become a mirror, and he did not like what he saw reflected back.

One night he sat on the edge of our bed, quiet for a long time, then admitted he had never once considered how much I carried, or how his proposal had actually been a request to be rewarded for doing less.
