The judge slid the contents of the envelope across his desk so the clerk could enter them into evidence. Inside were six years of records I had quietly kept, not out of suspicion, but out of the habit of a woman who has learned that being dependable means keeping receipts. Every signed loan acknowledgment my sister had scribbled at kitchen tables, promising to repay me “once I’m a doctor.” She had forgotten those existed. I had not.

But the paper that made the judge laugh was the last one. It was a notarized letter from Grandpa Walter himself, written two months before he died, clear-eyed and specific. He had suspected exactly this would happen. In it, he explained that he was leaving the larger share to me precisely because I was the only grandchild who had ever given without invoicing the family for it, and that if anyone contested the will claiming he was “confused,” this letter should be read aloud. My sister’s own lawsuit had triggered the very document designed to defeat it.
