The Wife Who Cared For Her Ailing Mother Alone Then Watched Her Husband Wait On His Own Hand And Foot

“Tell her the truth,” I said, setting my coffee down. “Tell her that when my mother was sick under this roof, you called her soup baby food and mocked the way she ate while her hands shook. And tell her you just asked me to hide in the kitchen scrubbing dishes so your mother wouldn’t be bothered by the noise, the same woman you drove forty minutes to buy scones for.” His mouth opened and closed. Upstairs, his mother’s footsteps crossed the guest room. He looked up at the ceiling, panicked, only now understanding how it would sound spoken out loud.

“You want to know why I’m leaving?” I went on, my voice even. “It was never a busy week or a stressful season. It was whose mother deserved kindness. Yours got a queen. Mine got an audience for your jokes while she nearly fell in our kitchen.” I zipped the suitcase shut. “I stood at that sink last night and finally understood the truth. You didn’t marry a partner. You married unpaid help. And your help is giving notice.” He reached for my wrist, and in that single motion he showed me the exact reason I would never come back.
