The local paper had run a short business item naming me as a co-founder of the startup the Seattle firm had just acquired. Nadia had seen it. Marcus had seen it. And suddenly the sister they shoved onto the porch in a grocery bag was worth answering the phone for.

I did not call back. Instead, I opened a certified letter my attorney Paul had forwarded, one my mother had written weeks earlier and given to him for safekeeping, not knowing what was coming.
