The Overlooked Daughter Told To Skip The Party Whose Company Appeared On Her Father’s Champagne Table

I zoomed in on the photograph until the fine print filled my screen. Beneath the bold title, in smaller letters, my father had listed himself as a “founding advisor” and “equity stakeholder” in Northstar. None of it was true. He had printed hundreds of these booklets and placed one at every table, using my company, my nine years of work, to impress two hundred fifty people who thought he was a self-made financier. He had turned my life’s work into a prop for his image on the very night he told me not to come.

I set the phone down and felt something cold and clear settle over me. My father had not just excluded me. He had decided to profit from the daughter he was ashamed of, without ever asking. So I got dressed. Not in the gray sweatshirt, but in the one good dress I owned. I drove the hour to Boston, walked into the Wexford ballroom mid-toast, and the string quartet seemed to falter as two hundred fifty heads turned toward the door.
