A soft chime sounded on my end as the documents landed in their inboxes. I heard my mother’s breath catch. Then paper rustling, a chair scraping, and my father’s voice, suddenly less certain, muttering, “What is this.” I waited, watching the waves. On their screens were the deed records showing who had really been paying the Savannah mortgage for six years, the payoff statement for Grant’s law-school loans, and the account histories behind the “pension” my father had bragged about at every holiday.

“That,” I said quietly, “is what happened.” The line went silent in a way it never had at that dinner table. For thirty-six years, I had been the one who went quiet. Now it was their turn. My father found his voice first, but it came out thin and grasping, nothing like the man who had pointed me toward the door the day before. “Diana, we can talk about this. You misunderstood. It was Thanksgiving, tensions were high.” I had waited my whole life to not be interrupted. So I let him finish, and then I told them the truth.
