The manager led us into a small security office behind the resort lobby. On his phone was a paused frame from a boardwalk camera. He pressed play. The elderly vendor stood at his cart, but he was not watching Lily. He was watching a tall man in a gray cap who had been trailing a few steps behind us the entire walk. In the footage, the vendor stepped between that man and my daughter every time he drifted closer.
The manager swiped to the next clip. The vendor had scribbled something on a napkin, tucked it under Lily’s cone sleeve, and mouthed a word to the camera he knew was recording. The napkin read one line. “The man in gray has been following the child since the parking lot. Call police. I will keep them at the cart.” My stomach dropped. The free cone had never been about kindness at all.
