The Anniversary Party My Parents Planned Ended At A Locked Gate And A Recording

Sheriff Reyes listened to every word of the voicemail, and the professional patience drained out of his face. “Mrs. Carter,” he said quietly, “you just told me you have no intention of respecting this trespass notice. That recording is a stated plan to enter the property against the owner’s wishes, through a side door, to avoid a scene.” My mother’s ivory dress suddenly looked less like a costume for a triumph and more like the outfit of a woman who had badly miscalculated. Behind her, forty guests stood on the gravel road in their anniversary finery, catering trays cooling in the van, the string quartet holding their instruments and pretending not to hear.

My father tried to smooth it over the way he always had, with volume and the assumption that no one would actually stop him. He told the sheriff this was a family matter, a misunderstanding, that of course they had permission, that I was being dramatic and ungrateful. But Sheriff Reyes had already heard the plan to sneak through the kitchen, and he had watched my mother try a gate code she had no right to use. Upstairs, my eleven-year-old daughter stood in the window in her medical mask, eleven days out of specialized treatment, and I watched the sheriff glance up at her, then back at my parents, and make his decision.
