The New Year I Spent Alone Was The Night My Father’s Fraud Finally Collapsed

I walked to the door with my heart hammering, certain the fraudulent trail Dad had built would land on me first. But when I opened it, the two detectives on my step were not there to arrest me. They were there because I had called them three days earlier. The lead investigator, a woman named Detective Portillo, held up a folder and said, “Ms. Bennett, thank you for coming forward. We needed to confirm you were safe before the names went public tonight.” Behind me, still on the phone, Meredith went silent as she heard the detective’s voice through the line. I had worn a device to that meeting because I already knew what he was planning. The detectives had spent weeks corroborating everything I gave them. The news broadcast at 11:58 was not my father being caught off guard by strangers. It was the culmination of a case I had handed the state, on my terms, timed to a night he had told me I was too uncomfortable to attend.
