My fiancé, Damon, crossed the room, but he did not reach for me the way I braced for. He reached past me and gently closed the bedroom door behind us, and when he turned back, his face was not the face of a cheating man caught in the act. It was pale, tight, terrified. “You need to leave,” he whispered, so low the woman couldn’t hear. “Take the baby and go, right now, please.” The woman on the bed laughed again, that same laugh from the monitor, and I realized she was not undressed, not intimate, not anything I had spent three hours on the highway imagining. She was fully dressed, sitting perfectly still, and there was a bag at her feet I did not recognize.
“He’s not going anywhere,” the woman said, standing slowly. “And neither are you now.” That was when I saw it, the reason Damon’s hands were shaking, the reason he’d told me on the monitor that we “had plenty of time.” She was not his lover. She was collecting a debt. Damon had borrowed money from people I had never known existed, and this woman had come to our house to make sure he paid, or to make sure he understood what would happen if he didn’t. The “promise” she wanted him to keep had nothing to do with me catching them together. It was about what he’d sworn he would hand over.
