The Flour Tin Mama Guarded For Decades Held The Truth About My Stolen Settlement

The branch manager came out from behind the glass wall and asked me, very quietly, to follow her into a private office. She had known Mama for thirty years. When I set the flour tin on her desk and showed her the sealed page, her hands trembled almost as much as mine. “Your mother opened something with us a long time ago,” she said. “She made me promise not to say a word until you came in holding this.” Then she pulled a thick folder from a locked drawer, one that had been sitting in that bank waiting for me for longer than I could have guessed.

But she had done the one thing she could. Every month for the rest of her life, she had quietly set aside cash from her own grocery money, hidden it in the flour tin, and put whatever she could spare into a second account at First County, in my name, that Earl never knew existed.
