Rosemary recovered fast, the way people do when they have rehearsed control their whole lives. “There’s no need for attorneys, Fiona. This is a family matter.” But I had heard those words used as a weapon too many times in three months to be soothed by them now. I set my coffee down and told her, calmly, that a demand for thirteen hundred dollars a month based on an undisclosed loan was precisely the kind of thing attorneys existed for. Spencer sat frozen between us, finally understanding that the quiet, dependent wife he and his mother had planned around did not actually exist.

Then I laid the first card on the table. I still held the lease on my old apartment, the one I had never given up, quietly renewed the month before the wedding because something in Rosemary’s smile had always told me to keep a door open. I could walk out of this kitchen tonight and sleep in a home that was entirely, unquestionably mine. Rosemary’s face changed as she realized her leverage had just evaporated. But it was the second card, the one about the closing paperwork, that made Spencer go pale, because he suddenly understood I knew something about the apartment that he had assumed I never would.
