The Foyer Seat They Gave Me Turned Into The Night They Never Forgot

Adrian crossed the banquet hall to the head table, where Weston and Delaney sat beneath the string lights, and he set a leather folder down beside my son’s plate. The room’s chatter dipped. “Mr. Weston,” he said, loud enough for the nearest tables, “the balance for this evening. Per the updated arrangement, the family discount has been removed and the event is billed at full price.” Weston opened the folder, and I watched the color drain from his face as he saw a number he had never expected to pay. He had planned this entire fifty-guest affair assuming my discount, and, I suspected, assuming my quiet monthly help would keep flowing to cover the gap.

Delaney set down her champagne and hurried over, hostess smile faltering. She glanced at the invoice, then at Adrian, then across the whole glittering room toward the little table in the foyer where I sat with my iced water. Our eyes met. She finally understood that the woman she had banished to the coat check was the same woman whose name unlocked the discount, whose SUV she’d wanted to borrow, whose eight hundred, no, whose eleven hundred dollars a month had quietly propped up the life she was so proud of. Her carefully arranged evening was coming apart, and she had built the fault line herself.
