I pressed play. The room filled with my son’s own voice, recorded weeks earlier at Colleen’s realty office, calmly telling a stranger that his mother had “mobility issues” and “wasn’t really managing on her own,” inventing a decline that did not exist so he could be handed a key to a house I had bought with my own money. On the screen, he signed a form claiming to act on my behalf. In my living room, ten faces went pale at once. Nathan, my son, opened his mouth, but there was nothing to say. His teenage children were staring at him now the way you stare at someone you thought you knew.

Theodore let the clip finish, then closed his leather folder with the quiet finality of a man who has seen this exact scene resolve a hundred times. “Obtaining a key through a false statement about a homeowner’s capacity,” he said, “combined with entry using that key, is not a family misunderstanding. It’s fraud and trespass, and it’s all on record.” Raymond, still in uniform by the kitchen, added that no one was under arrest tonight, because I had asked him not to make it that. But the choice, he said, looking around the room, now belonged entirely to me.
