I discovered a hidden camera in our Airbnb bedroom at midnight. My husband quickly covered it with a towel, and we went back to sleep, unsettled but trying to stay calm. At 2 a.m. the door burst open. The Airbnb owner stormed in, furious, screaming that we were idiots and that the camera was only meant to watch the street outside. Why had we covered it?
He explained that a string of thefts in the neighborhood—including the theft of his own car—had left him paranoid. He had installed the camera to monitor for trouble and admitted to checking the footage obsessively. The device was aimed at the street, not the bedroom. Still, the explanation did nothing to erase the shock of a stranger forcing his way into our rented room in the middle of the night.
We packed and left first thing in the morning, shaken and uncomfortable. Breaking into the space we had paid for crossed every reasonable boundary, regardless of his reasons. We posted an honest review warning future guests about the intrusion and the owner’s behavior. Later, reading through other reviews, we saw the same pattern: outbursts, excessive security measures, and guests left feeling violated.
We could understand how repeated thefts might make someone anxious. Understanding did not excuse the invasion of privacy or the bizarre midnight confrontation. The stay became one we would never forget and one we would never want anyone else to endure. Some vacation memories are meant to be treasured. This one still feels like a warning.
