My mother’s finger trembled as she pointed at me on that porch, twenty-three relatives frozen behind her, the deputy waiting at the bottom of the steps. “You want to know why?” she said, her voice cracking into something I had never heard from her. “Because every time I look at you, I see him.” The room went so still I could hear the ocean past the dunes. She did not mean my father, the quiet man everyone believed had raised me. She meant someone else entirely, and the shape of the truth began to rise in me the way Grandma Rosalind’s letter had hinted at for years without ever saying it aloud.

Bethany looked confused. Preston looked at the ground. But great-aunt Margaret did not look away, because Margaret already knew. My mother had been nineteen when she had me, and the man who fathered me was not the husband she married two years later. She had spent my entire life resenting the living proof of a chapter she wanted erased, and she had solved that resentment by simply removing me from every photograph, every holiday, every version of the family she rebuilt. Grandma Rosalind was the only one who had refused to play along. That was what she meant when she said my mother hated what I reminded her of.
