The Stranger’s Party On My Ranch Ended The Moment I Handed Over My Present

I reached into my jacket and pulled out the folder I had grabbed from my truck. Not a gift box. A slim manila folder holding the deed to the ranch, the property survey, and the county tax records, all with my name printed across the top. That was the birthday present. I set it on the picnic table beside her four-tier cake and told her, quietly enough that only the front row of guests could hear, to open it. She didn’t. She just stared at the folder as though it might bite.

The phone call I had made an hour earlier was not to the police. It was to the county sheriff’s non-emergency line and to my caretaker, Hollis, who lived twenty minutes down the road and had a full set of records of his own. As the woman in the tiara hesitated over the folder, two vehicles turned off the county road and came up my long gravel driveway, a sheriff’s cruiser and Hollis’s dusty pickup. The music had already stopped. Now the whole party turned to watch the flashing lights roll in, and for the first time all afternoon, the birthday girl’s practiced confidence cracked straight down the middle.
