The Stranger Beside Me In The Back Row Knew A Name Nobody Else Remembered

The ceremony blurred around me while that single word echoed. Rosa. My mother had called me that. My grandmother. And one boy, forty years ago, a whole life and an ocean of choices away. I studied his face beneath the gray at his temples, the strong line of his jaw, and slowly the past rose up through the man beside me like a face surfacing in water. “Mateo,” I breathed. He smiled, just barely, and pressed my hand tighter. “You remember.” Of course I remembered. He had been my first love at sixteen, before my family moved, before letters went unanswered, before I convinced myself that door had closed forever.

But this was my son’s wedding, and Mateo did not simply happen to be here. As the vows began at the altar, he leaned close and told me the second impossible thing. He had not come as a guest of mine or of the bride’s family. He had come as the single most important business associate of the man whose daughter my son was marrying, and he had recognized my name on the guest list weeks ago. He had asked to attend for one reason only. To find out why the groom’s own mother had been hidden in the back like something shameful.
