“The Meridian account files,” I finished for her. “Yes. Every one of them.” Mrs. Whitfield set down her pen. For two years I had lowered my voice and swallowed my questions, but I had never stopped being who I was. Late at night, while Damian slept and his family congratulated themselves at their long dinner table, I had kept my old auditor’s login active, backed up quietly to a private drive no one in the Ashford family knew existed. I had watched the invoices vanish. I had watched the reimbursements that led nowhere. I had simply never told them I was watching.
