I pulled on my boots and stepped onto the porch just as the noise reached its peak. A cement truck sat idling at my grandfather’s iron gate, and beside it stood Beatrice in her white BMW, arms crossed, watching a crew prepare to pour. She had finally made her move. She smiled at me the way a cat smiles at something small. “Consider this beautification,” she called out.
I did not shout. I did not stop them. I simply pulled my phone from my pocket and began recording, capturing the truck, the crew, Beatrice’s face, and every word she said. Because Beatrice had forgotten the one detail her arrogance could never account for. That gate was the only point where the HOA’s single road met the main highway. If she sealed my gate shut, she was not locking me in. She was locking all forty-seven of her McMansions behind a wall of concrete, on a road that legally belonged entirely to me.
