The Son Who Changed The Locks Learned Whose Name Was Really On Everything

My first call was to my brother-in-law, Douglas, a family attorney who had drawn up every document Carol and I owned. I put him on speaker so Bryce and Danielle could hear every word. “Douglas,” I said, watching my son’s face, “I need you to confirm something for my son. Whose name is on the deed to this house?” There was a brief shuffle of papers. Then Douglas answered clearly. “Yours and Carol’s. Jointly. There is no one else on the title, and there is no clause promising it to anyone.” Danielle’s tape measure slipped from her hand and clattered against the tile.

Bryce started to speak, but I raised one finger and made a second call. This one was to the locksmith listed in my contacts, the same company that had installed the keypad Bryce had reprogrammed. I asked them a simple question, loud enough for the room to hear. “Can a homeowner remove an unauthorized user from a smart lock and restore full control tonight?” The answer was yes. Bryce’s confidence began to crack right there in my kitchen.
