The Family That Called Me Trash Discovered Exactly What My Name Had Been Holding Up

One switch became a dozen. I moved down the list slowly, deliberately, the way you dismantle something you once built by hand. The house loan, set to auto-draft on the first, went first. Then the crossover lease. Then the family phone plan that kept five devices humming across the city. Each cancellation asked me to confirm, and each time I pressed yes, my chest felt lighter instead of heavier. By midnight the note beside me was a graveyard of crossed-out obligations, and my phone had stopped vibrating, because they had no idea yet what was coming.

I did not send a warning. I had already sent the only message that mattered. Everything in my name disappears tomorrow. They had reacted to it with a thumbs-up and a heart, treating it as another dramatic bluff from the sister who always calmed down by morning. But I was not calming down. I finished my tea, washed the cup, and went to sleep for the first time in years without setting my alarm around someone else’s schedule. The countdown they never heard was already running.
