I gripped the phone so hard my knuckles ached. “Canceled? What do you mean canceled?” My sister’s breath came fast on the other end. She told me to sit down, then she explained what had unfolded in the hour I had spent alone in my quiet house. Apparently Marcus had grown frantic when I never arrived. He had cornered Brianna in the bridal suite and demanded the truth about why his mother, the woman who raised him alone for twenty-nine years, would vanish on his wedding day.

Brianna had tried to lie again, insisting I was simply ill. But one of the bridesmaids had overheard everything at the rehearsal dinner the night before, every cold word Brianna had whispered to me. And that bridesmaid, standing in a room full of guests, finally decided she could not stay silent. She looked at Marcus and repeated exactly what Brianna had said. The suite went completely still.
