The Retired Engineer They Underestimated Traced Every Forged Signature Back To Its Source

The person I called was not a moving company. It was Margaret Lindqvist, the attorney who had managed Rosemary’s trust for two decades and knew every asset, every account, and every signature I had ever produced. I read her the notary’s name, the county seal number, and Preston Vale’s firm. She was quiet for a long moment. Then she told me something that made the calm in my chest turn to ice.

The notary listed on the forged power of attorney had lost her license eighteen months earlier. Whoever prepared these documents had either bribed her or invented her seal entirely, and that meant the sale could be unwound and someone could be prosecuted. But Margaret warned me the real danger was time. Once the buyers began transferring funds, reversing everything would take months. I asked her one question. Could we freeze the sale before Friday? She said yes, but only if I could prove the signature was forged before a judge, and only if I was willing to expose my own son to a criminal fraud investigation. I looked at the ticking grandfather clock. Then I said the words that would end my family as I knew it. “Do it.”
