“I need you to sign something,” Bradley said, and the careful warmth in his voice was almost impressive. He explained it quickly, the way people do when they hope speed will hide the ask. He and his wife were refinancing the house, the one I had helped buy, and the lender wanted a signed letter confirming my sixty-thousand-dollar contribution had been a gift, not a loan, so it would not count against them. He needed my signature to move forward.

I set my coffee down. Eleven days earlier, I had stood frozen on his porch in the snow while his wife told me I was not immediate family and my son said nothing. Now he needed me again, and he had not asked a single question about the night he sent me home. Not whether I was hurt. Not whether I was safe. So I asked him the only question that mattered. “Bradley, do you remember what happened on Christmas Eve?”
