The Empty Chair Where I Should Have Sat Told My Son Everything He Needed to Know

My hands shook as I gripped the phone. Canceled. I asked my sister what had happened, and for a moment all I could hear was the noise of a crowd behind her, confused voices, someone crying. Then she told me. Nathaniel had arrived at the venue, scanned the front row where I should have been sitting, and found my chair empty. He had asked Kendra where his mother was, and she had given him the same lie she gave everyone. That I was unwell.

But my son knew me. He knew I would never miss his wedding over a headache. So he did something Kendra never expected. He walked out to the parking lot, called my sister, and asked her, directly, what his fiancée had said to me the night before. And my sister, who had held me while I cried that morning, told him every word.
