The Two Envelopes I Set on the Christmas Table Ended a Forgery Years in the Making

Craig stood frozen, his leather folder forgotten, his own recorded voice still hanging in the air. Vanessa looked from the annuity statements to her husband, and I watched the belief she had carried for years, that Mom had generously helped me, crumble into something far uglier. The missing ninety-five thousand dollars from Dad’s insurance had never gone into my house. It had gone into Craig’s failed car-wash business, and the forged mortgage existed to hide the hole.

“Open them,” I said, nodding toward the two envelopes. Craig’s hands shook as he reached for the first. Inside was a confession and repayment agreement, drafted by my attorney, laying out exactly what he had done and what he owed. He looked up, ready to threaten me the way he had at the coffee shop. Then I told him what was inside the second envelope, and every ounce of confidence left the room.
