Bianca’s mouth opened, but no words came. Preston’s hand hovered near his useless platinum card. Gerald let the silence stretch just long enough, then explained, in the same warm voice he had used to greet me, that the entire reservation, all three suites, sat under my account because I was the one who had arranged them for the family reunion. Bianca’s certainty about my fixed income and my failed little life wobbled visibly.

“Why would the whole thing be under her name?” Preston demanded. Gerald glanced at me, silently asking permission, and I gave him the smallest nod. He turned back to my daughter and her husband and said the words that would rearrange everything they thought they knew about me. “Because Ms. Griffin isn’t a guest here in the ordinary sense. She sits on the ownership group that holds this property.”
