The Signature She Forged Was the One Piece of Evidence I Had Been Waiting For2

Renata explained what was wrong with the document once my mother finally hung up. The power-of-attorney form was dated three weeks after I had legally revoked all authority, which meant it could not have been valid under any circumstance. Worse for them, the notarized witness statement carried a seal from a notary whose commission had expired the previous year. The signature meant to authorize the theft was instead a written confession of fraud, forgery, and conspiracy, all stamped and dated in their own hands.

The recording of the phone call sealed it. My mother had admitted, out loud and on the line, that she signed the papers and moved the money. Kayla had named the notary who falsified the seal. Renata forwarded the audio to the police officer still standing in my living room, and within the hour a full investigation had opened across three names, including the notary who had traded his credibility for a favor.

The four hundred thousand dollars never left the bank. Because the fraud team had frozen the receiving account before the transfer cleared final review, every dollar was returned to me untouched. The frozen debit cards left my mother and sister stranded at the airport with no way to fund the trip they had bragged about, which was why they had called me six times in a panic. The happiness they claimed to be choosing had lasted only a few hours.

In the weeks that followed, Marlene and Kayla were both charged, and the notary lost his license before facing his own charges. My stolen furniture, the crystal glasses from my father, and my jewelry box were recovered from a storage unit they had rented under Kayla’s name, catalogued perfectly against the photographs and serial numbers I had recorded months earlier. I refurnished the house slowly, room by room, and changed every lock. The last thing I did was frame the sticky note they had left on my counter, not as a wound, but as proof that the audience my mother always craved had finally seen exactly who she was.
