A Forgotten Camera In My New Living Room Recorded The Plan My Husband Never Told Me

The footage began to play. My empty living room, timestamped from three days earlier, a weekday afternoon when I’d been at the office. Marcus walked into frame first, then Carol, and they sat at the dining table with the same realtor folder Carol had handed me an hour ago. The audio was faint but clear enough. “Once she signs the refinance,” Carol was saying, “the house goes into the trust under your name and mine. Vanessa’s name comes off entirely. She put in most of the down payment, but the paperwork won’t show it that way.” Marcus nodded, the exact comfortable nod I’d watched through the car window. “And if she asks why her name isn’t on it?” “Tell her it’s a tax thing,” Carol said. “She trusts you. She always signs what you put in front of her.”

I stood in that cluttered bungalow with my hand over my mouth. It was not an affair. It was worse in a way I hadn’t braced for. My husband and his mother were quietly maneuvering me off the deed of a house I had largely paid for, using a “refinance” I would have signed that very night if the realtor folder had gone unquestioned. The old man, the previous owner, watched my face. “There’s more,” he said quietly. “Keep watching. They talk about the money.” He reached over and let the recording continue, and what Carol said next made my legs go cold.
