The moving truck rolled into my driveway just after sunrise, and my mother-in-law, Diane, stood on the porch smiling as she announced that her daughter and grandchildren would soon be living in “Eric’s house.” She gave me two weeks to leave the red-brick home outside Raleigh, even though I had spent nearly nine years paying the $2,480 monthly mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, and every major repair. I never argued. I calmly placed a blue folder on the breakfast table, opened it to the ownership page, and answered a call from my attorney on speakerphone. Within seconds, the smiles around the room disappeared.
