Three days before Christmas Eve, my mother looked at me across the dining table and said the best gift I could give the family would be to disappear. She spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear. That night I packed a suitcase and left. By the next morning I had accepted a cash offer on the house, which was solely in my name. I canceled every secondary credit card, utility account, and subscription they used. I stopped the automatic payments and notified the caterer that the elaborate Christmas Eve dinner my mother had charged to my card was canceled. When they returned from shopping to find the legal notice and the itemized list of seven years of financial support taped to the refrigerator, the carefully constructed performance of their lives collapsed.
