The Day My Parents Brought A Realtor Onto Land They Had No Idea Was Guarded

Six months after I closed on the ranch, I took my two weeks of leave and finally moved into the property full-time, having transferred to a reserve position so I could build the life I wanted. I had installed security cameras across the house, the barn, and both entrances, partly for a remote property and partly out of the same habit that made me a good JAG officer. Document everything. What I did not expect was that my own parents would give those cameras something to record. One morning in July, an alert lit up my phone while I was mending fence on the far pasture. A car had come through my front gate. Two people I recognized instantly, and a stranger in a blazer holding a clipboard.

My mother. My father. And a realtor. I watched the live feed from my phone as the realtor gestured at my house, my barn, my land, the way a person gestures at inventory. My father pointed toward the pasture. My mother nodded. And through the camera’s microphone, I heard the sentence that told me exactly what they believed they were doing. “We’ll list it by fall,” the realtor said. “Once the paperwork’s transferred to your daughter Priscilla, we can move fast.” They thought the land could be taken and handed to my sister. They thought I was alone out here, a naive woman who would fold the way I always had. They had no idea I was already dialing two numbers.
