The Video My Mother Left Behind That Exposed Everyone Waiting To Take My Inheritance

My mother’s recorded voice was steady in a way it had not been in her final months. “Eliza, if Corwin is still living in your house, you cannot let him know what I’m about to tell you. I hired someone to look into him after your wedding. I’m sorry. But what they found could not wait until I was gone.” On the screen, she slid a folder into view, the same handwriting she used for her vineyard projections filling the tab. She had known. Before the diagnosis, before the will, before I stood on that back stair listening to my husband plan his access to my accounts, my mother had already seen exactly what Corwin was.

She continued, and every sentence landed like a stone dropped into still water. Corwin was not the grieving widow’s gentle rescuer he pretended to be. He had a history, two prior relationships with women who had recently lost someone and recently come into money, both of whom had signed things they did not understand. And then my mother said the part that made the room tilt. “There is one more thing, and it will hurt more than the rest. He did not find you by accident, Eliza. Someone introduced you. Someone who knew what you would inherit.” On the tablet, my mother looked directly into the lens, and Thaddeus reached over to pause it, because he could see my hands shaking. “There’s a name at the end,” he said quietly. “Your mother wanted you to hear the rest before you saw it.”
