The Mother In Law Who Stole Water For Her Pool Never Guessed What The Neighbor Knew

The something I told the HOA was simple, but it was the one thing Patricia had spent two years hiding from the entire neighborhood. Her pool was illegal. When she’d had it installed the summer after moving in, she had skipped the permits entirely, hiring an unlicensed crew who dug and poured without a single inspection, precisely to save money, the same instinct that had her stealing my water instead of paying for her own. I knew because I had watched the whole thing happen from my kitchen window, and because our HOA had strict, enforced rules about pool permits, fencing, and inspections. She had gambled that no one would ever report a “family” matter. She gambled wrong.

The next morning, an HOA officer and a county code inspector arrived at her door with a clipboard and a camera. That was the screaming I heard through the fence. Patricia, who had laughed in my face about being family and never paying for anything, was now facing an unpermitted pool, a mandatory inspection she could not pass, daily fines, and the very real possibility of being ordered to drain and remove the whole thing at her own expense. And that was before anyone got to the water. Because I had done one more thing that morning, quietly, before the inspector even arrived. I had documented everything.
