The Musician They Told To Just Forgive And Forget Understood The Lesson Perfectly

I did not do what my hand wanted to do. For one long moment, standing there with Grayson’s Mercedes key warm in my palm, I imagined it, the scratch down the door, the snapped emblem, giving them back exactly what they had given me. Then I understood that would make me the villain in the story they were already writing. So I set the key back in the bowl. Because I had realized something better. Grayson had a Mercedes, a lake membership, and a mouth full of opinions about what was “real” and what was “cheap.” And I, quietly, had spent eleven years as a session musician and studio owner, with contracts, receipts, and something my family had never bothered to ask about: an insurance policy on my instruments, and a very good lawyer.

I walked back into the living room, calm now, and did not raise my voice. “You’re right,” I said again, and they relaxed, thinking I meant forgiveness. “Family matters more than objects. So let’s keep it in the family.” I looked at Grayson. “You said you’d cover the repair. But it can’t be repaired, so you’ll cover the replacement instead. Twelve thousand dollars. My insurance appraiser is coming Tuesday to document the loss, and my attorney will send you the paperwork. Since you instructed a minor to test my property until it broke, and admitted it in front of six witnesses, we can do this the simple way, or the expensive way.” The laughter stopped.
