The Christmas Card That Called Me A Burden Sent Me A World Away

I did not answer that first day. I checked into a small, sunlit apartment near the old center of Madrid, unpacked my two suitcases, and let my phone buzz itself into silence on the kitchen counter. The sealed document Theodore had prepared sat in my carry-on, and I knew that once I opened the conversation about it, there would be no closing it again. The mortgage, the tuition, the insurance policy, all of it had shocked Marcus into a panic. But those were only the monthly threads. The document in my bag was the whole cloth.

When I finally called Marcus back, two days later, his voice cracked the moment he heard mine. He was not the confident man from the living room anymore, the one who had looked prepared instead of worried. He asked, again and again, whether I was safe, whether I was coming home, whether Nadia’s card had really driven me to leave the country. I told him I was safe, and I was not coming home, and then I told him what was in the envelope. For a long moment, there was only silence on the line, the kind that stretches across an ocean. Then he said, very quietly, “You changed the will.”
